Suction Accumulators
Compressors are designed to compress vapours and not liquids. Air-conditioning systems and many other applications require intermittent operation of the compressor. Specially in split and package air conditioning, the suction line may trap or hold quantities of liquid which suddenly get dumped into the compressor as it starts up. This often results in broken valve reeds, pistons & cranks etc. The purpose of the accumulator is to act as a reservoir to temporarily hold excess oil-refrigerant mixture and return it at the rate which the compressor can safely handle.
